No RUSM – now What?

Post Hurricane Maria woes continue to directly hit every sector of this country, and this most recent redundancy of employees’ situation at the Ross University School of Medicine is a hard one to process.  I don’t work there, neither do I have any person in my household who does, but living in this town (Portsmouth where this institution is located), and knowing so many people (some friends and relatives) who have been employed at Ross for years are enough reasons to be able to empathize with all affected.

On a national level, this phenomenon is definitely going and has already begun to dent the treasury’s purse, and that of so many members of the private sector.  From utility companies, to home-owners, restaurateurs, tour operators, taxi drivers, doctors, nurses and the local ‘hustlers’ selling coconut water along the Ross Boulevard to name a few, are negatively impacted.  The apartment owners with high mortgages requiring regular attention, and bankers who are probably now orchestrating means to collect much needed payments from the now unemployed is equivalent to a horror story unfolding without restraint.

I mean let us face it – no one really saw this madness coming pre-Maria, but it has, and is evolving rapidly.  Who can forget the folks in the food shacks adjacent to the school, those super-market owners and employees, the bus drivers who made regular trips to and from Roseau carrying Ross’ employees and students, the health fairs offered by the med- students, and the litany of positive rituals surrounding daily processes of the institution that many of us took for granted?  The point is, Ross University School of Medicine is a much required venture in Dominica, and should or must be fought for.  I make this statement with the hope that it is not too late for that fight to ensue by all relevant parties with the weight being on the shoulders of the powers that be.  Continue reading

Faith amidst world madness!

p10406372017 has begun with many new developments. A new President for the United States, a new program plan on the job, new orders being signed by D.Trump, new daily news, new shocking observations as pertains to our own nations’s development. New, new new.

Amidst the newness, I suspect there is a level of trepidation that is plaguing various sectors of our world, and our citizenry here in Dominica. This, coupled with deep uncertainty of what this year will bring make it difficult for the average peace-loving, justice-seeking and carefree-world-citizen to relax and hope that all will fall in place for the good of the majority.

The Wall, the threat to hike taxes on Mexican imports, the disagreement about paying or not paying for that wall, the rumors of the CBI (Citizenship By Investment) program, the constant political noises blurring through cars, and homes tuned in to various radio stations and television channels here at home all cloud our focus. Faith – the ammunition!

Faith and hope!

Faith and hope!

The old 2014 is closing, giving us two more days to consider what we will plan for 2015.  The reality is that the world continues business as usual.  Certainly, once 12:00am occurs on Thursday, the wicked regimes of the world will still be planning mayhem, conspiring their next torturous acts, the Western world will continue its celebrations, Christians in some parts of the world will still be suffering great persecutions, the girls of Nigeria will still be hurting from the loss of their education, innocence, pride, and familial safety, and world leaders will probably all be seeking new ideas for their nation states.  Man this world is so chaotic, it is with great apprehension many humans are looking toward 2015. Mere hurt is nothing!

Heaven give us hope in a world full of conflict. We ask for the hurting souls, some relief oh God!

People will write you off in life.  That is just how it is.  You cannot do much to change their choice if and when that happens.  Notwithstanding that fact, one must do everything within his or her power to continue living a life fulfilled.   Besides, to do otherwise is to hand-deliver ones life’s power to someone else who does not care a single thing about him/her.

When I think about the crisis that occurs all around us, the mere hurts dished out to us, are really peanuts.  Heck, so many real souls are being lost daily, so many hearts are being literally shattered, so many limbs are being broken by wicked acts of other real people.  The small rejections, write-offs, and their cousins are definitely unimportant. This is an Emergency!

ImageSo much can be said about the frequent killings and violent acts now plaguing our nation and region.  One could assume that there is a certain plot to destroy the safety, stability and sanity of our society.  The question begs to be asked?  Who is winning this battle for our society’s soul and heart?  Further concerns linger to the extent of; “Why are these crazy things occurring?”   It becomes easier to focus on the blurry lines, the dark scenes, the scary reality and the sad stories.  Meanwhile, it seems like desensitization is captivating the conscience of the populace.  If not desensitization, then maybe its apathy, hopelessness or just plain blank visual, emotional, social, spiritual and societal defects. Abyss of Obscurity

Sometimes in life people fade into an abyss of obscurity. This happens by force, or maybe by choice. It is easy to occur. Maybe it is a necessity for the faded in order to be found elsewhere. Probably it is a requirement in order to achieve other goals. Still one’s ability to fade into obscurity may just be due to the fact that anything else would possibly compound a torturous situation.

Then, there is the obscurity which occurs by the ability of others who will not hesitate to quickly throw the obscured to the curb. Yes, that happens too. Sometimes the very people the faded gave most of the self to are the exact ones who will be eager to see them vanish. So want or want not, faded will the obscured be…straight into the hell hole of obscurity like they never existed.

In obscurity, there is a feeling of loss, deep grievance, frustration, and the faded individual is likely to border on a level of depression intermittently. Inspiration de-materializes, sleep depletes, and moods develop a pendulum -like behavior.   Continue reading
